HCMC – The Ministry of Information and Communications will conduct a two-week comprehensive inspection of TikTok’s activities in Vietnam from May 15, it was announced at the ministry’s regular press conference this morning, May 5.
This inspection will focus on how TikTok’s algorithm distributes content that can create trends on social media and negatively affect viewers, especially young people.
The Ministry of Information and Communications will collaborate with other ministries and agencies to evaluate TikTok’s impacts on the community, improve the quality check for content and manage TikTok Shop’s e-commerce activities.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Public Security and the General Department of Taxation under the Ministry of Finance have also joined the effort, according to Le Quang Tu Do, head of the Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information.
Previously, the Authority of Broadcasting, Television and Electronic Information pointed out six major violations of TikTok Vietnam in April, comprising TikTok’s failure to handle content violations; its algorithm to spread content, even offensive ones for views; the lack of measures to prevent the sale of counterfeit goods; the mismanagement of TikTok idols’ activities; non-copyrighted content; and the mismanagement of personal information.
TikTok’s representatives said that the inspection would be an opportunity for TikTok to listen to feedback from the Government and improve its operations in Vietnam.
Currently, Vietnam has some 50 million TikTok users, ranking sixth among the countries with the most users worldwide, according to online report provider DataReportal.
