HCMC – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has asked the U.S. recognize Vietnam as a market economy and ease procedures for Vietnamese exports to the U.S. market.
His request was made at his meeting with Emily Blanchard, chief economist of the U.S. Department of State, during her working visit to Vietnam on October 25.
During the meeting, the two sides reflected on the elevation of bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership during U.S. President Joe Biden’s state visit to Vietnam in September.
PM Chinh suggested that specific measures be taken to advance the comprehensive strategic partnership, with a particular focus on enhancing cooperation in economy, trade, investment, science, technology, innovation, digital transformation, and semiconductor production.
He praised the U.S. government’s ongoing review process for recognizing Vietnam as a market economy and urged an expeditious completion of this process.
PM Chinh also requested that the U.S. further open its market to Vietnamese products, reduce restrictive measures such as anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties, and eliminate unnecessary measures affecting Vietnam’s exports, especially agricultural and wooden products.
Blanchard concurred with PM Chinh on the need for various measures to solidify bilateral ties.
She commended Vietnam’s impressive achievements in economic growth, macroeconomic management, and inflation control and affirmed the U.S.’s commitment to enhancing its stable relationship with Vietnam.
