HCMC – The Vietnam Railway Authority (VNRA) is currently soliciting feedback on a proposed plan to build a 440-kilometer rail line connecting Hanoi with three northern provinces – Lao Cai, Haiphong and Quang Ninh.

Designed for a speed of 160 kilometers per hour, the railway will start in Lao Cai Province, traverse Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Hanoi, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Haiphong, and end at the Cai Lan Port in Quang Ninh.

This railway will be distinct from the existing Hanoi-Lao Cai and Hanoi-Hai Phong lines. It will be 1,435 millimeters wide, accommodating both passenger and freight trains.

The project includes the construction of 56 substantial bridges, 11 tunnels, and the crossing of numerous rivers, such as the Red River, Lo River, and Bach Dang River. It will also intersect with major expressways, including Hanoi-Lao Cai, Hanoi-Haiphong, and Haiphong-Quang Ninh.

The consulting firm emphasizes the necessity of investing in the Lao Cai-Hanoi-Haiphong-Quang Ninh rail line. It will establish a vital link between China’s Kunming-Hekou North line via the Lao Cai border gate, streamlining the transportation of goods between the two countries.
