HCMC – Vietnam’s aquatic product output from January to August reached 5.9 million tons, up 1.9% year-on-year, according to the Vietnam Directorate of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Fish products accounted for 4.2 million tons, growing 1.7% compared to the same period last year. Similarly, the shrimp industry expanded by 3.6% year-on-year to a total of over 812,000 tons.
The overall volume of other aquatic products increased by 1.5% to 864,500 tons.
Despite these positive trends, the aquaculture sector is currently facing several challenges. The soaring prices of feed have led to production costs inflating for tra fish and shrimp, impacting profitability.
Moreover, the onset of the rainy season has affected fishing activities at sea, further complicating the industry’s operational landscape.
To address these issues, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has directed provinces to establish expansive industrial agricultural zones. This strategic move aims to secure the supply chain for processing and export purposes.
There’s an urgent need to enhance the aquatic veterinary system on a nationwide scale.
The Government is actively promoting the growth of a fleet of ships to provide vital logistical support, simplifying supply procurement for offshore fishing vessels.
Furthermore, the ministry underscores the importance of establishing a comprehensive network of processing facilities and commercial cold storage units to enhance production capabilities.
