HCMC – The prime minister has issued a decision allocating an extra VND4 trillion to the Mekong Delta provinces to put landslides along rivers and coasts under control.

The funding, drawn from the state budget’s reserve for the year 2023, will be distributed as follows: Kien Giang, Ca Mau, and Vinh Long provinces will each receive the most substantial sum of VND500 billion, while Ben Tre, Soc Trang, and Bac Lieu will each get VND300 billion.

Each of Can Tho, An Giang, Dong Thap, and Long An provinces will be allocated VND250 billion while Tien Giang, Tra Vinh, and Hau Giang will receive VND200 billion each.

Provincial authorities are instructed to prompt relevant bodies to complete the investment procedures and ensure that capital allocation adheres to the applicable laws and regulations.

Provinces are also responsible for allocating funds from their local budgets and securing capital from other sources to cover any shortages in approved projects.

The erosion prevention project along riverbanks and coasts is expected to be completed by December 31, 2024 at the latest. It is crucial to ensure the quality and enhance the efficiency of these investments, said the Government.

To prevent losses and misuse of funds, provincial authorities must provide periodic reports on capital allocation and project implementation to the relevant ministries for the Government leader’s review. In case of wrongdoing related to capital usage, the Government retains the right to revoke allocated capital.

In recent years, Mekong Delta provinces have faced landslides and erosion along their rivers and coasts. In May of this year, An Giang experienced severe riverbank erosion, affecting many sections along the Hau River. Similarly, Dong Thap saw two landslides in May, resulting in six houses of local residents falling into the river.
