HCMC – Vietnam recorded its first fatality from monkeypox as an immunocompromised male patient died at the HCMC Hospital for Tropical Diseases on October 25, 18 days after being diagnosed with the disease.

The patient, a 29-year-old resident of the Mekong Delta province of Long An, was admitted to the hospital in early October, following a nine-day battle with blisters, according to the HCMC Department of Health.

Subsequent tests confirmed the presence of monkeypox. The individual had underlying immunodeficiency disorders due to HIV and was also grappling with a severe Candida infection, leading to septic shock and multiorgan dysfunction syndrome.

Medical professionals administered acute treatment, including dialysis, antibiotics, antifungals, anti-tubercular drugs, and mechanical ventilation. The HCMC Department of Health has established an expert council tasked with conducting a comprehensive assessment and preparing an official report about the case.

As of October 22, the hospital had reported a total of 20 monkeypox cases, with two of them categorized as critical clinical cases.
