A mountain pass challenges backpackers

Me Pia Pass, situated in the northern mountainous province of Cao Bang, presents a formidable challenge to backpackers. Located on National Highway 4A in Bao Lac District—a border district with China—Me Pia Pass is also known as the “14-story pass” or Khau Coc Cha Pass.

The 2.5-kilometer-long pass is a vertical slope, so it is built into 14 bends to lower the height, for increased convenience. From afar, Me Pia Pass resembles a giant python winding round and round.

Despite being known as one of the most dangerous passes in Cao Bang, Me Pia has become a favorite destination for those drawn to the thrill of exploring the splendor of nature.
